Armada by Ernest Cline is a sci-fi novel that follows Zack Lightman, a teenage gamer who discovers that the video game he excels at, "Armada," is actually a government simulation training players to defend Earth against an impending alien invasion. When the threat becomes real, Zack and other top players are recruited to use their gaming skills in a battle for humanity’s survival. The story blends nostalgia for 1980s pop culture with action-packed sequences and explores themes of heroism, responsibility, and the blurred lines between reality and fiction.

The most compelling aspect of Armada is the way it taps into the dream many gamers have. The novel is packed with thrilling action and clever references to sci-fi culture, which makes it a fun read, especially for those who enjoy nostalgia for 1980s pop culture. The book itself was really predictable. I was very disappointed on how it followed the similar plot of many of the author’s other books. The book felt a lot like Ready Player One, which followed a very similar plot as Armada. I’d recommend Armada to anyone who loves video games, sci-fi, and a heavy dose of references. It’s a fun, quick read, but is not very unique. I give this book a three out of five.
