The Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo is a fantasy novel, the first in the Six of Crows Duology and part of the greater Grishaverse series. It is about a group of teenagers who set out on a mission to free a Grisha chemist who has made a drug that can greatly enhance Grisha's Powers. Grisha are people born with magical powers, highly valued in most countries. However, the country of Fjerda considers them witches and wizards and wants to do away with them. They have captured this chemist and are keeping him in the Ice Court — the most secure place in the entire world. A lord from the city of Ketterdam in Kerch has given Kaz Brekker, the notorious gang leader the assignment to go free the chemist. He collects his team of six people and takes on this impossible task. The book is really, really good. I absolutely loved the characters in the book. They were so deep and had so many layers and complexities to them. Their backstories were so well written as well. Especially for the character of Kaz Brekker, his character was so complex and mysterious. There was not much information given about his background at first but as the plot went on, more was revealed about him, and the reader was able to understand why he acted in certain ways or made certain decisions. Also, I think that the balance of the love relationships in the book was perfect. It was very subtle and unique compared to other similar books. There were multiple pairs, each of whom had a unique relationship and that was good because it was overwhelmingly emotional. Overall, great plot and story, but definitely loved the characters more!
