The Penderwicks is a heartwarming story about friendship, sisterhood and loyalty by Jeanne Birdsall. It depicts the family's vacation to Arundel in the Berkshire mountains. Along the way, the sisters meet a boy named Jeffrey as he struggles to find his place among his ill-natured mother and her cruel boyfriend. The sisters form lifelong friendships, make countless memories, share adventures and of course find themselves in plenty of mishaps during what they thought would be an ordinary family vacation.
Overall The Penderwicks is one of my all time favorite novels that I constantly find myself reaching for when I'm in need for comfort and nostalgia. It is written for youth, however it can be enjoyed by any age. In a style and storyline that strongly resembles a modern retelling of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. It is extremely well written and brilliantly brings back memories of the reader’s own childhood. I would highly recommend it to anyone, however it especially appeals to children.
