Caraval is a story of two sisters, Scarlett and Tella, who are stuck on a small island. Their whole lives have been controlled by their abusive father, so they are trying to find a way to escape their home as well as Scarlett's arranged marriage to a duke she had never met. After years of writing letters to Legend, the master, Scarlett finally gets tickets to Caraval, an interactive show filled with deception and magic. These tickets were Scarlett and Tella’s only chance at freedom, so they embarked on a trip to see Caraval with the help of a mysterious sailor. When they reach, Tella gets kidnapped as a part of the show, and Scarlett is forced to find her sister before anything happens to Tella or her father and duke find them.
I thought the plot was interesting and was captivated by the story, characters, and all the plot twists. However, with the plot twists, I sometimes found myself confused as the book suddenly changed to a faster pace. I also would have liked to see more character development as there were many opportunities for growth throughout the story. Overall, it was a good book with interesting characters, but slightly more detail could have been included about the characters and more time taken for the plot's climax. I would rate this book three out of five stars.
