In David Frankel’s 2006 film, The Devil Wears Prada, main character Andy (Anne Hathaway) is a fresh graduate from Northeastern University and aspires to be a journalist in New York City. As Andy waits to fulfill her dream job, she settles on working as an assistant for the editor of Runway magazine- the biggest fashion magazine around. However, she isn’t just working for any assistant- she’s working for highly acclaimed editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). Andy is accepted into the position but is blinded by what is yet to come. Everyday Andy struggles with meeting her editor’s high expectations and humiliating daily tasks, while also trying to fit in with the culture of her new workplace. The more Andy consumes herself in her job, the more she loses herself and risks the people in her life. Eventually, Andy must come to terms with herself and decide what’s best for her and her dream to become a journalist.

I give The Devil Wears Prada 4 out of 5 stars. The characters’ story perfectly balances the elements of life, work, and self-reflection with the fun spin of taking place in the fashion industry. It only made sense for a fashion movie to take place in famous cities like New York, and I think the settings perfectly captured the heart of the movie. As someone who is passionate about fashion, I loved seeing the 2000s style and the outfits worn by the characters along with the emphasis on designer brands. I give it one less star because I feel like the ending was predictable, and some points of the film were slow-paced. I recommend this film for those interested in fashion or anyone who wants a lighthearted watch. This inspiring and stylish film will definitely become a comfort movie of mine!
