Rooney is a senior in high school, but she sure doesn’t feel it. In fact her entire life has been put on hold to keep her family afloat, all thanks to The Next World Society. Rooney thinks the group is nonsense, but the idea that all the members will leave earth by November 17th is the only thing her mother believes in and her little brother is starting to fall for it too. We watch Rooney as she struggles with who to trust and how she can keep herself, and her family together as they countdown to November and face the aftermath.
Come November for me was a very anxiety ridden read, but done masterfully so. I couldn’t put the book down. I could feel Rooney slowly losing faith in her mother's capabilities to parent and her growing distrust in those around her. You can feel the pain she feels when she thinks she is losing her only friend and the joy when she finds people she can put her faith in. I really enjoyed the pacing as well. Every few chapters would tell you the month you were in as Rooney counted down to November which created so much suspense. I loved the fact that everyone in the book has flaws. Rooney isn’t a saint by any means and there are some scenes where you really feel that. I found myself screaming at the book over some of her actions because you could feel her sabotage herself. I do feel the need to warn readers that there are mentions of cults and cult-like behavior as well as mental illness. There are a lot of depictions of panic attacks and unhealthy coping mechanisms that are heartbreaking to read. However, I felt that all of these topics were dealt with extreme care and were written very realistically. Overall, I loved the book and had a great time reading it. It’s a fast read so if you have a long drive or need something to do at night I highly, highly recommend
