This book follows the story of Trevor Noah’s childhood as he explains and explores his experience with the harsh realities of Apartheid South Africa. You are carried along the stories of his struggles facing racial discrimination and poverty that would shape him and this memoir. Filled with both humor and heart-felt moments, Trevor Noah portrays his childhood through this amazing memoir.

I really enjoyed this book as I explored the perspective of Noah through his rough childhood. Even though he discusses some very serious topics, his humorous tone really enhanced his writing and made me feel a bit more comfortable reading about those harsh topics. I don’t normally read memoirs, but I’m glad that I read this book because even though I have never been through an Apartheid, I really connected with Trevor and learned a lot from his experiences. Overall, this book made me laugh, made me cry and was just a very inspiring read.

I recommend this to anyone in search of a memoir to read (this is by far one of the best I’ve read) or anyone who just wants a read in general. I would say that this book is mainly for young adults as it mentions things like abuse, violence and other mature topics, but anyone 14+ should really be able to read it.
