"We're raised to call them champions, but I would argue there's a better word: sacrifices."

When a book is published, it unveils all the dirty secrets of a small town which harbors the last of the high magic which exists in the world. Every twenty years, seven families pick a child from their bloodline and send them into a battle of the death over the finite resource. Under a blood moon, six children’s corpses rot while one victorious family leaves with their child and the high magic, or at least for the next twenty years before it begins again. Now the public is aware of the horrors occurring, and the seven children chosen for this generation are thrust into the spotlight. How will the media’s attention change the game as it existed for millennia?

I liked this book. I found it enjoyable, but not super consuming. The characters were interesting, but the concept was what made the book stand out. Very Hunger Games-esque. My personal favorite part, what kept the book in my hands was the small tidbits from the fictional book detailing the event, which starts every chapter. It might not have been the highest form of literature but was a good book to pass the time.
