The city of Ilvernath has a tragic curse, and an even more horrific history. Every 20 years when the Blood Moon rises, the 7 families of Ilvernath must send their children to compete for high magick. High magick is the world’s most treacherous and powerful resource, thought to be long gone. However, this year’s tournament is very different from the ones of the past. It is now brought under international attention due to the publication of an unknown book. This book tells of all the families’ strengths, weaknesses and the story of the curse. The champions in this year’s tournament are Alistair Lowe, yielding from a cruel and unusual family, Isobel Macaslan, an acclaimed spell maker, Gavin Grieve, whose family has not yet won a tournament, Briony Thorburn, who is determined to be the savior in this tournament and Carbry Darrow, Elionor Payne and Finley Blair, all forming an alliance to win. With even more at stake, these 7 champions must fight to bring respect and high magick to their families. However, there lies a way to break the tournament’s curse and end things for good. It is up to the 7 competitors to decide the fate of the tournament.

In my opinion, I really enjoyed this book! It was intriguing to experience the different viewpoints of the characters and how they resolved their conflicts. This book was a dark fantasy that kept me compelled to keep reading and find out what would happen next in the tournament. It has themes of friendship and teamwork which I enjoyed. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys dystopian reads or adrenaline filled books.
