Perhaps the funniest book in the Anne series, Anne of Avonlea follows Anne through her first “grown-up” experience teaching at the local school. L.M. Montgomery introduces several new important characters – the hilarious Mr. Harrison, twins Dora and her bad-boy brother Davy and younger Avonleans of all kinds.
Though written a century ago, the novel is still accurate in its portrayal of the joys and tragedies of teen life. The sweet, slowly-unfolding romance between Anne and Gilbert Blythe is a pleasure to read. The shifting alliances of the Pye family and the unexpected appearance of “bad days” all test Anne’s equilibrium. But her good friends sustain her and lift her up. The mysterious story of a lonely spinster who is reunited with her long-lost love adds a big dose of magic and encourages readers to persevere through trying times. This is a wonderful book for anyone to enjoy.
