Normally I am not a big nonfiction reader. However, Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup, by John Carreyrou, was a very well written nonfiction book. I would give this book a 4 out of 5 stars. The book details the story of Elizabeth Holmes, who starts a new blood testing company called Theranos, with her boyfriend at the time, Sunny. The two of them aim to take blood testing and quicken the process along with making a machine that can be installed in homes in order to allow for a more efficient process. The two of them, however, create a company built on lies and a bad culture. Employees are constantly cycled in and out, and the company signs deals with big pharmaceutical companies, but is unable to deliver. Eventually they attempt to put phony devices in service, however they are ultimately brought down as a huge lie. The author of the book, John Carreyrou, does a magnificent job with the book. He spent a lot of time interviewing people and during the whole Theranos scandal published a big paper that would help bring the company down. He transferred all of his work into a well written and well-developed book. The crazy part about this book was Elizabeth, the woman that started the company. At one point she was evaluated at $5 billion. Elizabeth was oftentimes seen as a brilliant woman that was commonly referred to as the next Steve Jobs. Despite this, her inability to discern between a product and prototype eventually led to her downfall. The shady business and poor treatment of the employees also came back to bite her as many testified against the company in the trial. She is now serving a long term in jail.
