The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is a historical fiction novel based on Nazi Germany during World War II. The book has a unique approach to storytelling as the narrator of the story is actually Death. The character Death narrates the story of a girl named Liesel, who early on was placed into a foster care home. Instead of the usual perspective of a Jewish person in Germany for a book like this, the book actually focuses on the viewpoint of a German which I found quite interesting. Liesel grows up in the wake of World War II and is forced to conform to their standards, even if she does not agree. During this time, she read books, and lots of books. She started off by stealing books from book burnings but eventually made it to the house of one of the customers of her mother, who did laundry for them. Then, in the midst of everything, her foster family decides to hide a Jew in their basement due to promises her father had made. Overall, the book was an enjoyable read, although I would get lost at times due to the unique narration. This book is definitely not for those who like to read stories that have happy endings, as this book is full of sad elements. Overall, a very good read.
