Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime is a memoir about growing up in Apartheid South Africa and his youth after Apartheid ended. Noah discusses his close relationship with his Xhosa mother and how his existence was essentially illegal. His mother being Xhosa/Black and his father being White/Swiss was a crime that was highly punishable. He grew up having to pretend his mother wasn't his mother and that his father wasn't his father, learning to be alone often. After Apartheid ends, Noah learns how to fit in when feeling like an outsider because of his mixed race and that struggle continuing all the way up to adulthood.
This book was one of those books where when you finish, you just stare at the wall in admiration, awestruck by how incredible it was. As we follow Noah's stories growing up, we get to know his mischievous, hilarious younger side. We learn about the relationship between him and his unconditionally loving mother. We learn the struggles of growing up in Apartheid and Post-Apartheid South Africa. This book is a roller coaster of a journey looking into the life of a young Trevor Noah navigating through a tough world. This is a five-star book and I would 100% recommend it to everyone.
