Scarlet and Tella finally leave their homeland after years of masked misery with the urgency to return in fear of the source of that misery--their father. Intrigued by the magic and wonders of the land of Caraval, they agree to play a game and meet the man they’ve always looked up to--Legend, who isn’t at all what they imagined. While Tella seemingly gets lost along the way, Scarlet is forced to compete and win the game of Caraval if she wishes to see her sister again.
This was a pretty easy read and took me less than 2 weeks to finish. Surprisingly, it wasn’t super predictable--a reason why it was hard to put down! I would recommend this book to someone who enjoys adventures--while it isn’t about a huge hike or climb, it was definitely illustrative of the developing emotions and mental journeys the characters experienced. There is also a factor of romance that is closely tied with the narrative, but doesn’t overdo it to where it’s categorized as a romance book. All in all, it was a great read and I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
