The Catcher in the Rye, a work of fiction by J.D. Salinger is about the life of a teenage boy, Holden Caulfield. The story concerns Holden as he attempts to find happiness through experiencing the motions of life. Such begins with his lack of interest in academics, branching into his survival/personal experiences and finding interest in any part of existence. The book also discusses a person’s authenticity vs phoniness, the effect of maturity on decision-making, and the pursuit of independence and the following consequences. Since this book is one of a minority that is in a first-person perspective, it brings a unique view. This view is one of a teenager, and it may have a distinct element of sarcasm and literary indicators associated with present-day teenagers. This work by Salinger leads to many discussions and is still a breath of fresh air in the world of novels today. Some content in the book may not necessarily be suitable for younger teens. I give this book five marks from a maximum of five.
