Chain of Gold, by Cassandra Clare, follows a group of shadowhunters,
descendants of angels whose main goal is to kill demons, in 1903 London. Cordelia
Carstairs is a young shadowhunter moving to England with her family. While there she
reunites with her childhood love, James Herondale, his sister and Cordelia’s best friend,
Lucie, and a host of new characters. While Cordelia gets acclimated to her new home, a
series of murders starts popping up around London. As the shadowhunters get closer to
the mystery, forbidden love, murder, and betrayal surround them.
This book was very enjoyable. The Shadowhunters book series is a huge
collection, and this book was especially interesting as it focuses on the children of former
main characters from a previous trilogy. Cassandra Clare’s writing is always extremely
funny and quick to read, which makes this a very easy and entertaining read. Cordelia
and James’ romance was so sweet and made me really root for them as a couple. This
book’s plot was a bit weak, but overall it was still a great addition to the series.
