In City of Bones by Cassandra Clare, Clary Fray is a normal teenage girl residing in New York City. However, her life takes a sharp turn when she witnesses a murder committed by people who no one else can see. This introduces her to the world of Shadowhunters, a group of warriors that are dedicated to protecting the world from demons. Clary soon learns shocking truths about her family, her past, and her own hidden abilities. Alongside the Shadowhunters, particularly Jace Wayland, she embarks on a journey to recover the Mortal Cup, a powerful object that grants the ability to create new Shadowhunters, and to stop Valentine, who has dark plans for the world.
The main character of this book is Clary Fray, along with some important characters including Jace Wayland and Simon. Clary wanted to find her lost mother, who had been kidnapped and captured as well as uncover the truth about her past and her connections with the Shadowhunter world. However, Valentine, a power hungry Shadowhunter who wants the Mortal Cup for himself, is standing in her way. In order to defeat Valentine, Clary teams up with Jace as well as the other Shadowhunters. Gradually, as the book progresses, Clary learns more about her mysterious powers. At the end of the book, some of the mysteries are solved, however some remain hidden. Her journey is still not over as Valentine escapes with the Mortal Cup.
In my opinion, this book is really fast paced that blends fantasy and romance as well as mystery. I found the detailed descriptions of the Shadowhunter world incredibly compelling and captivating. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Urban fantasies with strong female leads. Fans of Harry Potter and Pery Jackson would thoroughly enjoy this book.
