The City of Ember is a dystopian city constructed as a last retreat for humanity, located hundreds of miles beneath the Earth's surface. The city is kept illuminated by thousands of glass light bulbs, but it is slowly decaying, with the lights about to go out forever. Lina and her friend Doon set out to decode a secret message that could save the city from total darkness.
The City of Ember is an extraordinary book that kept me engaged and craving for more. The series is a perfect blend of mystery, adventure, fantasy, and science fiction. Although the characters are not particularly noteworthy, the story is gripping, and it feels as if I was alongside the characters, attempting to solve the mystery together. Despite some predictable plot twists in the middle section, most readers will be rooting for the appealing main characters.
