City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare continues the story of Clary Fray, Jace Herondale, Simon Lewis and their friends as they work through the aftermath of Valentine’s defeat and the restoration of peace. However, the peace is short lived as new threats develop. As Clary begins her training to become a true Shadowhunter and plans her future with Jace, Simon struggles with his new life as a Daylighter vampire. Meanwhile, mysterious murders of Shawdowhunters are occurring and Jace is plagued by dreams that put a strain on his relationship with Clary.

The main characters are Clary, Jace and Simon. Other key characters include Alec, Isabelle, Magnus Bane and other new antagonists like Lilith. Clary wants to finally have a peaceful relationship with Jace while training as a Shadowhunter. Simon wants to balance his human life with his new vampire nature. Jace wants to put an end to the nightmares and the strange behaviors that are beginning to take over his life. Jace’s mental and emotional state is deteriorating due to a connection to Lilith, a demon who is manipulating him through dark magic. His distance from Clary creates immense tension. Meanwhile, Simon is marked by the powerful Mark of Cain, making him a significant target for forces. There is also the growing threat of Lilith, who wants to bring back Sebastian using Jace. Clary and the others work together to figure out what is wrong with Jace and why he is acting strangely. Lilith’s plan to bring back Sebastian is revealed and Clary must make dangerous choices to save Jace from fear. Just as Lilith nearly succeeds in resurrecting Sebastian, Simon uses his vampire powers and defeats her. However, the book ends with the group unsure of what is yet to come, as Jace, who seems to be safe, is now under Sebastian’s control due to Lilith’s magic.

The most compelling aspect of the story is Jace’s internal battle, which raises the stakes for him and Clary. Simon’s journey is also interesting as he learns to embrace his own identity. I would recommend this book to fans of The Mortal Instruments series and young adult fantasy in general. Readers who enjoy character driven stories that include romance and supernatural elements will love this.
