The Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo is a fantasy novel, the second in the Six of Crows Duology and part of the greater Grishaverse series. Following the first book where the group of teenagers broke into the Ice Court to free the chemist who created jurda parem, this book follows the group again as they attempt to get the money they were promised after being double-crossed by the lord who sent them on the mission. At the same time, there are conflicts between the different countries as well. Some Shu soldiers seem to have been enhanced by fabrikators under the influence of parem, making them almost invincible. This wreaks havoc on Ketterdam because they keep attacking Kaz and his group to get the chemist for themselves. Oftentimes sequels don’t turn out as good as the first book, however, The Crooked Kingdom is an exception. The new plot and storyline were amazing. Details from the previous book were so well incorporated that it didn’t even feel like a whole new book. The introduction of new characters was seamless for the most part and the events really brought out more of the characters’ personalities and especially their self-doubts/vulnerability, making me love them even more. The plot was very well created and was very unique. I love fantasy books and I’ll be honest; I don’t think I’ve ever read a book with a similar plot. Overall, loved the duology and love the author. I might even check out some of the other books in the Grishaverse.
