Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas is the second book in the Throne of Glass series. Celaena
has won the deadly competition and is now the king’s champion. She knows that the king is
bent on evil and would do anything to destroy the world. Anything but loyal to the crown,
Celaena tries untangling hidden mysteries in the glass castle. The more she uncovers the truth,
the more dangers she faces.
I didn’t hate this book but I didn’t love it either. Once I read the first book, I had to read the
second book too because the first book was pretty good. I would recommend this to people who
have read the first book, Throne of Glass. Some parts were very disappointing in this book, one
being my favorite character dies. After reading the first book, I thought it ended really well and
didn’t know what the second book could have been about. After reading the second book
though, I found out that there was an even bigger story and this book was where the story
“began”. I think that Sarah could have done a better job on this book.
I’m going to talk about some spoilers so if you want it to be a surprise when you read the book,
you probably shouldn’t read this part. First, I was so sad that one of Celaena’s closest friends,
Nehemia, was murdered. If you read the first book you would know how nice Nehemia was to
Celaena. I was highly disappointed in this part. I honestly feel like Sarah should have made
another character go (Maybe Chaol. Honestly, Chaol was probably my least favorite character
in this book). Second, I was so shocked to find out that Celaena was part Fae (Fae are people
who have magic and if you read the first book, magic no longer exists in the world). I was even
more surprised to find out that Celaena was the long lost queen of Terrasen. We knew from the
first book that Celaena was born in Terrasen and that her parents were murdered, but I would
have never guessed that she was the rightful queen. This book uncovered so many plot twists
and left me breathless. Even though I liked some of the plot twists, I definitely liked this book
less than Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass was sort of an intro to the series and it made me
want to read the series). I definitely didn’t hate Crown of Midnight nor did I love it so I would give
it a 3/5.
