A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer is a modern fantasy retelling of Beauty and the Beast. It follows Harper, who lives in Washington D.C., and how she gets sucked into the fantastical world of Emberfall, where Prince Rhen resides. Prince Rhen turns into a beast every night, and unconsciously and unwillingly hurts his own people. If he can get a girl to fall in love with him, then the curse will be broken. He has lost hope until Harper shows up and shows him that maybe he is deserving of love.

I give this book three stars because it wasn’t bad by any stretch of the word, but it just wasn’t super memorable for me. It’s a fun story, and written very well, especially given that it’s a retelling, but it just wasn’t for me. The representation of cerebral palsy in Harper is inspiring, without being her whole character, which is a nice touch. Overall, this is a good book for anyone who loves a good classic fairytale retelling.
