America’s youth is threatened by IAAN, a mysterious disease killing kids between the ages of 8 to 14. The survivors, however, are deemed a threat by the national government and are forced to work in rehabilitation camps. This is because of the color-coded powers they possess. Reds can create/manipulate fire. Oranges can alter minds and feelings. Yellows can manipulate electricity. The greens are brilliant. Lastly, blues have telekinesis. Ruby Elizabeth Daly is an orange who escapes from a rehabilitation camp. Ruby, and her new friends: Liam, Charles, and Suzume, must fight to survive on the run. Together, they try to find East River, the only safe spot for kids like them, but they must also evade certain groups who require Ruby for their fight against the government. I enjoyed this book because of the action and plot. The theme is friendship and bravery, which I felt was worthwhile to read. It was inspiring as I watched Ruby not let her past completely define her future. This is so she can better focus on her future and help her friends. It was also courageous of Ruby to try to help her friends in any way she could. In this book, I saw how much Ruby’s friends meant to her and how far she would go to protect them, which was honorable. I felt the book was engaging as the characters grew closer together and fought to protect each other. This book is a dystopian fiction and I was intrigued and curious to see what would happen next. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes dark fantasy fiction books. Overall, this book is a 5 out of 5 for me.
