The Davenports is a historical romance novel set in 1910s Chicago, following the lives of four young Black women navigating love, ambition, and societal expectations. The story is about the wealthy Davenport family who built their wealth through a carriage business and was one of the few Black elites of the era. Olivia Davenport, the eldest daughter, is expected to marry well but finds herself in love with a civil rights activist. Helen, her younger sister, is more interested in mechanics than debutante balls. Their friend, Ruby, is determined to win over Olivia’s supposed-to-be fiancé, while Amy-Rose, the family maid, dreams of building her own future and is secretly in love with one of the Davenport brothers. As they navigate love, heartbreak, and personal growth, the novel shows a clear picture of Black success and resilience in a time of racial and gender expectations.

The author offers a new perspective on historical fiction by highlighting a Black elite family which is often overlooked in traditional stories. The novel beautifully blends romance and historical detail, making it both entertaining and enlightening. Each character is well-developed, and their struggles and desires feel genuine. The Davenports is a captivating and important read, celebrating Black history, ambition, and love in an era that is rarely explored in youth fiction. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romance novels and historical fiction because it is an amazing combination of the two.
