This book is really good, though maybe not the best (in my opinion) out of
all of the books in the Shatter Me series (Defy Me is book five). While it’s
definitely worth it to read, I feel that it does have some boring spots, which
is unusual for this series. The most interesting of the book is pretty far in,
so you have to read quite a bit to get to it. However, all of the stuff that
comes before has a lot of background information, which is definitely very
important for the story.
“I can't remember a single time in my life when someone apologized to
me for hurting my feelings. No one has ever cared about my feelings
long enough to apologize for hurting them. In my experience, I'm
usually the monster. I'm the one expected to make amends.”
- Tahereh Mafi, Defy Me (Shatter Me, #5)
In Defy Me Juliette has been taken captive, and has no idea where she is.
She finds out that it’s actually her psycho biological parents, and a whole
bunch of other things in her past that she hadn’t known... because her
memory had been wiped. So her parents are crazy, and she’s being held
captive.
But that’s not all. Warner is also being held captive, except he has no idea
where he is or what their plan for him is. Further away, Kenji is still with
the rest of the original group, trying to figure out what happened and
where Warner and Juliette are, with the help of Nazeera.
“I want to remember to celebrate more. I want to remember to
experience more joy. I want to allow myself to be happy more
frequently. I want to remember, forever, this look on Aaron's face, as
he's bullied into blowing out his birthday candles for the very first time.
This is, after all, what we're fighting for, isn't it?
A second chance at joy.”
- Tahereh Mafi, Defy Me (Shatter Me, #5)
Overall, Defy Me is very good. Not my favorite out of the series, but still a
must read. I love the multiple perspectives, and the beautiful writing style
of Tahereh Mafi. I definitely recommend this book, and make sure to read
the first four before Defy Me!
