Demon Copperhead, by Barbara Kingsolver, is a Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel that is inspired by Dickens' David Copperfield, centering around the life of a child as he matures.
This novel is a must-read book: covering the hardships of life in a small town with little support, the struggle of those impacted by the opiate crisis, and the shortcomings of child protective services. I was unable to put this book down. I was so invested in Demon's story and where his life would take him. Kingsolver expertly creates a character that you can help but feel for so emphatically.
This book is so well researched and rich. There is a clear voice in this book which makes Demon so relatable despite the fact that few readers will completely identify with his journey. I rarely rave about a book the way that I am doing now, but Demon Copperhead deserves any and all praise. It is expertly written in a manner that will not allow you to forget it. Although the book is lengthy, it is one hundred percent worth the read and I recommend it to any and all readers.
