Despicable Me 3 is a good standalone movie but is disappointing and lackluster when compared to its predecessors. The movie starts off showcasing Gru and Lucy on a mission to retrieve the stolen diamond from Balthazar Bratt a former child star. They end up failing to capture him and up getting fired. In a surprising twist, Gru finds out he has a twin brother. This premise is fascinating, but it also resulted in a movie that does not execute the story. The villain had a very well-done character design and background, but he failed to be intimidating and drive the story. The movie is filled with side stories that do not affect the plot and act as filler. The villain did not feel present during the duration of the movie, nor did the other side stories feel that important. Ignoring the story- the comedic relief, world building, backstories and character development match the level of the other movies in the series. Overall, the movie did not feel special, the animation and music were good as always, but there was no story. The only reason the movie does not fall apart is because of the presence of the strong characters built up in the previous installments. I give this movie a 3.5 out of 5 and recommend it to anyone who loves Minions movies.
