Disenchanted is a wonderful Cinderella retelling talking about a very important subject. Unlike its predecessor, Grounded, the novel focuses on multiple POVs and really makes us care about each character. Ella is a wonderful character and a strong person struggling through the death of her beloved mother and her father's remarriage. Her father only finally succeeded after the death of her mother and the fact her mother isn’t around to see it is devastating for her. Her mother died in a sweatshop and the kingdom's elite are the people doing it all and they are doing it unquestioned. Dash was just freed from an old curse of his family. He was just freed to be who he is instead of a manipulative heartbreaking charmer charming. Who he is is awkward and sweet and a little too convinced his peers are the good guys but with a little work maybe he can see what his kingdom is like with more clear eyes. Serge is working for the man- or more accurately the woman- Jules runs the fairy godmothers in a way unlike it was in the past instead of helping children in need, rich teens take up the time of the fairy godmothers. Serge wants to change it and he will! Once Jules retires but who knows when that will be? He goes along with everything until he gets his newest apprentice Jasper, overly emotional and sweet, who ends up taking a request for one Miss Ella Coach. Ella is a strong protagonist who is also caring and kind; her passion really makes me care about labor. Dash is flawed but also lovely and so much fun to be around. Serge is also so much fun as an adult protagonist he is an interesting change of pace he really shows the draining nature of a toxic environment even if he wants to change it.
Overall, it is a good read that really provokes thought on the sweatshops in our world. This story leaves me enchanted with its world and disenchanted with my own. It truly more than succeeds with its name.
