Beatrice Prior lives in a futuristic Chicago where society is divided into five factions: Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite. When each child turns sixteen, they get to choose whether to stay in the same faction, or choose their own path in a different one. Growing up in Abnegation, Beatrice was always taught to put others before herself, but her heart wants something different for herself. Tris decides to leave her family in Abnegation and join the Dauntless, a faction nothing like her previous one. Tris has to learn to fight, confront her fears, and most importantly, guard the secret that she is Divergent, or able to belong in multiple different factions. In a world where being different is dangerous, Tris must learn more about herself in order to stay safe. With the help of her instructor and love interest Four, Tris must learn to adapt to her new life. I loved learning details about this world that were omitted in the movies, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Tris gain strength and skills during the initiation process. In addition, I loved the dynamic between Tris and Four and enjoyed seeing how their romance formed during the book, and most of all, the important themes of self-discovery and choice.
