Red Kenny, a teenager struggling with the death of her mother, embarks on a road trip with five of her friends. The trip starts well, but, partway through, their RV breaks down. They have no cell service, no way to fix the truck, and no civilization in sight. When trying to fix the RV, the group realizes something is very wrong when they are shot at from the dark. They are stuck in the van, hostage, by the mysterious man outside. The man reveals that he needs the secret one of them is keeping, and that he will kill anyone who attempts to escape. The friends need to figure out who is keeping the secret and turn them in or escape.
The book was enthralling; I found myself invested in the characters. The title reveals that five of the main characters will survive, so this made me curious to see what will happen to cause their survival and the one death. You watch this from Red’s perspective, so you don’t know what the secret is or who it belongs to, as it may even be Red’s. The terror imbued into the characters was palpable, and I loved how Oliver slowly grew more insane and desperate throughout the night. I stayed up until 4:00 a.m. in order to finish. In my opinion, this was an easy five stars to give, and I would definitely recommend it.
