The Forerunner is an autobiography by Cori Bush who currently serves as the representative in the house for Missouri’s first congressional district. The book details her life before politics and how her experiences throughout her life have shaped her to be the person she is today. The book is really raw and honest and contains some heavy topics that Cori has experienced throughout her life, especially in her childhood. The book then touches on her life as a teenager and a young adult, this part takes up most of the book and perhaps a little too much as she talks about her struggles with her mental health as she faced eviction, sexual abuse and harassment. The book then ends with her journey to office and how she had to run twice before getting elected. Overall, this book is pretty inspirational and heartbreaking as Cori has gone through so much to get to where she is. However, I think the book got a bit too repetitive at points and I wish she would have talked more about her journey as a politician and her life after her election to the House. She also talks a lot about religion which can be kind of confusing and foreign at times. I would overall recommend this book to those looking to read about her story or just a politician with authentic roots who faces the same problems as everyday Americans do.
