“When people see tears, they stop listening to your hands or your words or anything else you have to say. And it doesn't matter if the tears are angry or sad, frightened or frustrated. All they see is a girl crying.”

A young girl grows up in dreary orphanage, mute, and dreaming of her parents coming to collect her. Her only company is the ghosts that only she seems to be able to see. After getting in trouble one too many times, she starts to seriously consider leaving her prison, when a letter from someone claiming to be her uncle invites her to their manor, Gallant. The catch? The last thing her mother left for her is a note warning her never to go to the very manor, the same one that now seems to be her only way out.

Definitely not Schwab’s best work, but that is to be expected as she is limited by writing YA. The story is most certainly interesting, and easy to read in a single sitting due to its length. After finishing, it is easy to forget about, and not very memorable. This book is something I call a popcorn read, meaning it’s short and sweet, and good for a mindless read, but if you are looking for something with heart, this probably isn’t that.

Fun, mindless read 4 out of 5 Stars
