Geekerella is a realistic fiction book written by Ashley Poston. It also happens to be the first book in the Once Upon a Con series. The book revolves around Elle Wittimer, a girl who lives with her step-monster and two stepsisters. Her only escape is a show called Starfield, and yet, now even her favorite show is about to be ruined. She has been patiently waiting for the cast decisions in the new live-action remake-and that excitement falls flat on its face. Elle’s favorite character, Carmindor, is being played by none other than Darien Freeman, is a soap-opera star and knows absolutely nothing about the fandom! Elle does not think that he will do the show justice, so she turns to the last thing to make her feel at home-her late-father’s very own Starfield convention. Throughout her journey, a mysterious number strikes up a conversation, who introduces himself as Carmindor. As the date of the convention looms closer, she catches herself secretly hoping that her Carmindor will also be at the convention and recognize her, but that’s a silly thought, isn’t it?
I really enjoyed this book, and something I found interesting about it is that it is a book with two speakers, each of them alternating per chapter. This allows you to see the story from multiple perspectives and to understand each character a lot more than would have been possible with one speaker. The book had me extremely hooked as I could not stop reading it (I stayed up until 1:00 AM attempting to finish), which is why I would give it 5 stars. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a fractured fairy tale with a modern twist. Even if that is not your jam, I would still recommend it because only a few large ideas resemble Cinderella, and the rest is a completely different story. This book is also great for anyone who is a fan of fandoms, as that is a huge part of the book and a big chunk of Elle’s identity. In summation, I would give Geekerella 5 stars because it has many elements that could be appealing to a wide range of readers and has many lovable characters that are easy to relate to. Happy Reading!
