Girl in Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow is a deeply emotional realistic fiction novel that follows the life of Charlie Davis, a 17-year-old girl struggling to rebuild her life after experiencing severe trauma and loss. I have read this book over and over again, wishing I could experience the emotional roller coaster of reading it for the first time. Glasgow provides an authentic view of what it’s like to be a teen girl struggling with mental illness and self-harm, which is heart-wrenching to envision at times, but it also sheds light upon the aspects of mental illness that cannot be viewed with the naked eye. Glasgow's ability to dive deep into Charlie's psyche and vividly depict her journey toward healing and self-acceptance is truly astonishing. For anyone interested in a character-driven narrative that tackles real-life issues with empathy and grace, this book is a highly recommended read.
