Jonas lives in a society without colors, choice, memories, and the concept of death. He is different from everyone else in his society because of his unnatural eyes, empathy, and ability to see color. Everyone has a vital role to play depending on their stage in life. At the Ceremony of Twelve, where all the 12-year-olds get assigned jobs, Jonas gets assigned Receiver of Memories. The Receiver of Memories is the most respected and painful job, for Jonas will experience all the memories of previous generations. After some training, Jonas realizes how much his community is missing and works to remove the Sameness that was created. This book was riveting and I was curious to see what would happen next. I felt that Jonas’s lessons showed how many different experiences there are and how we can value them. This book made me more aware of my perception of different viewpoints and backgrounds. I appreciated how Jonas used his unique experiences with his training and felt that a world with feelings is better than one without them. This book also teaches us to value our individual experiences further. I felt that the author portrayed sameness in Jonas’s society creatively. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Utopian fiction books or science fiction books. This book is a 5 out of 5 for me.
