Summary: Half Bad by Sally Green is a gripping young adult novel set in a world where witches live secretly among humans. The story follows Nathan, a boy born of a forbidden union between a White Witch mother and a Black Witch father. Nathan is hunted and oppressed by the authorities, caught between the two warring factions of witches. As he struggles to find his place in a society that fear and rejects him, Nathan embarks on a journey of self-discovery, facing dangers and betrayals. The book explores themes of identity, prejudice, and the search for belonging in a story of magic and survival.
Opinion: The most compelling aspect was its portrayal of the struggle for identity and acceptance. The protagonist, Nathan, grapples with his heritage as a half-White Witch and half-Black Witch, navigating a world with very dangerous things. The book guides you through Nathan’s journey, making you feel every step of his longing for belonging and every thrill of his fight for survival. I believe there should have been more character depth and a way faster pace. The book itself felt very slow. I would recommend Half Bad to anyone who enjoys fantasy worlds, diverse characters, and thought-provoking books. It’s a book were the modern world and magic collide. It is somewhat of a slow-paced book so if you look at books that cut right to the chase I wouldn’t recommend this book. I give this book a two out of five.
