Angie Thomas’ The Hate U Give is a Young Adult Fiction novel that recounts the experiences of Starr Carter, a teenage Black girl who attends a rich, white prep school—a stark contrast to her poorer, predominantly Black neighborhood. Starr has an intense desire to explore how to define her identity as a result of her different experiences with her two very different worlds. Her desire is primarily fueled by the death of her childhood best friend, Khalil, who was killed by a police officer. Through Starr, the novel explores police brutality, social status, racism, and prejudice. Starr attempts to shine light on Khalil’s case through activism and using her voice; while her efforts are met with personal and social challenges, Starr develops a newfound determination and strength to advocate for change and fight against discrimination within her community.
I would recommend this novel—it highlights the all too real experiences Black people face, even today. While the novel touches on themes that may be uncomfortable or disturbing, it does so in an engaging manner that stays with the reader long after they finish reading. The Hate U Give was additionally made into a movie, an extremely well-done film that I enjoyed and recommend, too.
