The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas is an amazing book that tackles themes of race, identity, and justice. The main character Starr Carter is a 16 year old African American girl who has two lives:her rich prep school and her poor neighborhood. For most of her life, they stayed separate, but it all changes when Starr’s friend Khalil is wrongfully shot by a police officer who presumed that Khalil pulling out a comb was Khalil pulling out a gun. The media shows Khalil as a drug dealer, so Starr tries hard to get the truth out, which causes many protests and riots.
In my opinion, this book gets a 5 out of 5. I have never read another book which has tackled as many issues as this book has. I personally loved the shifts in the story and love how it all flows together. I was never bored at any point in the story and there was always something that was bringing you in. Overall this book is one of my absolute must read books and it is always going to be a 5 out of 5 for me.
