The Hate U Give is a must read for fans of realistic fiction, and/or socially conscious books. The book is about Starr, a 16-year-old African American teenager who witnesses the shooting of her friend Khalil by a police officer. The rest of the book follows the struggles Starr faces while trying to seek justice for her friend and the impact it has on her and those around her. It has won awards such as Goodreads Choice Awards Best of the Best (2018), and Audie Award for Young Adult (2018). It has been translated into more than 35 languages and has sold 3.5 million copies worldwide.
I personally enjoyed this book because it tackles tough topics like racism and police brutality, but it is still easy to read for young readers. It includes a lot of modern-day pop culture references which makes it relatable to modern day teenagers. I enjoyed it thoroughly and would give it 5 out of 5 stars.
