The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas, is a must read.
Starr Carter lives in two worlds: in her rich prep school and in her run-down neighborhood. The
carefully maintained gap between these worlds is destroyed when Starr witnesses her unarmed
childhood friend, Khalil, shot and killed by police. After Khalil's death becomes public news,
strangers start calling him a thug, a drug dealer, and even a hitman. Starr is the only person who
knows exactly what happened the night Khalil was killed, and what she knows could upend her
entire life.
The Hate U Give is inspired by the Black Lives matter movement and is an influential and riveting
story about one girl's fight to achieve justice. The book is emotive and revealing. It demonstrates the
struggle that marginalized people face and the discrimination that they put up with. This book will
resonate with several people and will promote the education of those who do not have to put up
with discrimination. I appreciate how raw this book is and how it does not gloss over aspects that
may be difficult for people to read. It is honest and I recommend that all people read this book at
one point in their lives.
