Bilbo Baggins is a Hobbit who doesn’t like surprises. He enjoys his comfortable, carefree life in The Shire (his home). Suddenly, a great wizard named Gandalf shows up at his door, urging him to go on an adventure. Along with him come 13 dwarves: Bombur, Thorin, Dwalin, Balin, Fili, Kili, Oin, Gloin, Dori, Nori, Bifur, Ori, and Bofur. They plan to plunder the riches guarded by the powerful dragon, Smaug the Magnificent. Bilbo unwillingly agrees to be a part of the quest. The Party confronts trolls, arrives at Rivendell, crosses the Misty Mountains, ventures through Mirkwood, and approaches The Lonely Mountain. Bilbo also faces off against a creature called the Gollum and claims the One Ring on the way to the Misty Mountains. This book was fascinating because of Bilbo’s journey to raiding the treasure horde. I liked the mythical elements added because it made the book more intriguing. I was curious to know where The Party would go next in their journey. There were lots of smaller adventures within the quest that made the book more enjoyable. This book also has engaging character development, for example, Bilbo earns more trust throughout the book as he helps save the Party from numerous situations. It has themes of friendship, trust, and bravery, which I feel is beneficial to read about. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes adventurous, fast-paced books. This book is a 5 out of 5 in my opinion.
