The House on Mango Street is the coming of age story of a young Latina girl named Esperanza as she grows up with her family in a predominantly white Chicago. We get to see her struggles with friends, family, school, money, racism, and much more. What I love about this story is that it is told in vignettes. Each vignette is a unique portion of Esperanza’s childhood, each with its own lesson and message that can be applied to the lives of the reader. Through each vignette, we get to discover more and more about Esperanza’s life, and her growth as a young woman. The writing style progresses throughout the story. Some vignettes are told through the voice of a child, and some as a woman. I really enjoyed seeing this progression as she gained more life experience and matured. This story was very eye opening to me. As I have not had to deal with many of the events Esperanza experienced throughout the book, I enjoyed being able to get a glimpse into a completely different life than the one that I live. Overall, this was a spectacular story, and I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to get a new perspective on life and see the world through someone else’s eyes.
