The House on Mango Street is about a young Latino girl named Esperanza, navigating through her adolescent through teen life in Chicago. Her house and neighborhood aren't in very good condition, and throughout the book Esperanza talks about how she wants a house of her own in the future where she can be herself. Multiple events are happening in the book that shape her and give her new understanding of the world. However, near the end of the book, she learns an important lesson. Throughout this novel, there are expressions of identity and the faults of society. This book tells the story of a real Latino girl, without any sugarcoating - in some places, the book describes horrible and saddening things that shook me a little. I enjoyed the hidden messages and morals in all the vignettes, and they added to explanations of what Esperanza is really thinking. However, I found that the vignettes were slightly too disconnected and unordered. Some parts were a bit confusing, and you had to dig too deep to finally understand the hidden messages. Because of this, I give this book a four out of five.
