The Inheritance Games is a young adult mystery novel by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. It is the first novel in The Inheritance Games series. It follows Avery Grambs, a high schooler hoping for a better life. She gets her wish when she is left the inheritance of Tobias Hawthorne, a recently deceased billionaire. However, she has never met Tobias Hawthorne and has no idea why she got his fortune. To receive it, however, she must move into the Hawthorne House and solve the puzzles left behind by Tobias Hawthorne for her and his four grandsons.
This novel is great for mystery readers. It’s an engaging read, with twists and turns all throughout. The entire novel is fast paced and intriguing. The characters are likable with distinct personalities, which is particularly notable with the four grandsons, who could’ve been hard to distinguish if they weren’t given their own unique personalities. The ending keeps you invested in the series. However, readers may be disappointed in the lack of puzzles, as this book is more of a thriller at points. I would recommend this novel for mystery readers, especially fans of the movie Knives Out. I rate it 4 stars.
