Summary:
The Book, It Ends With Us, by Colleen Hoover, follows the life of Lily Bloom. For most of her
life, Lily has had to deal with her abusive fathers action towards her and her mother--who she
believes to be too weak to safeguard her own life. When she finally decides to escape the
shackles that her unfortunate childhood has put her through, she moves to Boston to have a new
start, but not without the reminders of her past. There, she meets Dr. Ryle Kincaid, a man who
she thinks could pave a new future for them both. However, the man of her past, Atlas, soon
comes back into her life, and she begins to question her future.
Opinion:
If you like to feel a lot of emotions when you read books...This is probably the book for you. It
Ends With Us was such an emotionally compelling book. This is primarily because of its ability
to allow the reader to view a completely new perspective on abusive relationships. Typically,
when told stories of abusive relationships, people tend to believe that the abused partner can
easily escape the relationship. It Ends With Us does a phenomenal job of explaining why that's
not usually the case, and how it's never as easy for the abused partner to leave the relationship as
we think. Lily’s journey matches that of the readers, from looking down on her mother for never
leaving her abusive relationship, to realizing just how difficult it must have been for her all those
years. In my opinion, the progression of Lily and Ryle’s relationship could have been better
developed, but even still, Hoover does an amazing job of showing just how quickly and
unnoticeable changes are in relationships.
