To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is set in Maycomb, Alabama during the Great Depression. The main character Scout Finch lives with her brother Jem and widowed father Atticus, who is a well-known lawyer in their community. In their neighborhood there is a spooky house called the Radley Place, no one knows what goes in there and there are many conspiracies regarding it. Scout, Jem, and their friend Dill were always curious, and they always played around the Radley house. And they even tried going onto the property, resulting in them running away terrified. As the story progressed, Atticus took on a case where he had to defend a black man, Tom Robinson. The Finch family received much hate because of this. During the trial, all evidence proved against Bob Ewell and his wife. Even though Atticus proved that the Ewells were at fault, the all-white jury still convicted Tom Robinson guilty. Bob Ewell won the case, but he still was furious that he was made a fool during the trial. To get revenge he tried to harm Jem and Scout but luckily, they were saved by Boo Radley who killed Ewell. Jem and Scout now saw the Radley's from a different perspective and they gained a different understanding of who Boo Radley was.

I would give this 3 stars because it featured life during the Great Depression in a different way. It showed how unfairly people of color were treated and that not everyone was against them. It had a powerful storyline because Atticus went against society so he could get justice for the right person, and he knew doing this could potentially put his family in danger. I would recommend this book to anyone that is looking to read a book set in the past with a meaningful story.
