The Last Mapmaker by Christina Soontornvat is a fantasy book with inspirations of Thai culture. In this book, Sai plays the role of a perfect girl working to provide herself with a future by assisting a mapmaker in Mangkon. When Sai is given the opportunity to chart the southern seas, she hopes to use the expedition to rid herself of her family secrets and make a name for herself on her own. As Sai gathers data on the seas they are passing through, she realizes that they are not going to where they were originally told, instead they are going to the Sunderlands. Stories of the Sunderlands have been known to contain things such as dragons and chests of gold, as well as many unforeseen dangers few people have ever successfully escaped from. I liked this book because of how it took a fantasy world and included parts of Thai culture, making this book seem slightly more realistic. I think that a lot of people will be able to relate to this book and the main character because of how well she represents working hard to earn a better life. This book was very action packed, making it very fun and interesting to read. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes twists and turns, and enjoys stories that seem familiar, but with a new twist.
