The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan is a somber and exhilarating final entry of the original Percy Jackson series. This book has Percy Jackson defending Olympus as Kronos attempts his final invasion into Olympus. Percy must beat Luke as Kronos as the Titan army mounts a full-scale invasion of Manhattan.
This is the darkest and most mature book in the series, and also has several beloved characters die. This book wraps up all the character arcs given before and is a satisfying end and resolution to the series. However, the formula is changed from a quest like adventure to a final battle. There is also an overdramatization of several scenes that makes it feel like an epic action movie instead, which is entertaining but also a tonal shift from the beginning books. Riordan has still managed to craft an exciting and exhilarating final bow for Percy Jackson with a captivating plot line and a tense finale that will have readers clinging to every word.
