Percy Jackson, a seemingly normal kid from Manhattan, New York, discovers that he is actually a half-blood with a god for a father. He is sent to Camp Half-Blood after having numerous encounters with mythological creatures in hopes that he will be kept safe. However, when it is discovered that Zeus’s lightning bolt has been stolen, Percy is sent on a quest to retrieve it with his friends Annabeth and Grover. The trio narrowly escape monsters and other creatures as they make their way to the Underworld to confront Hades, find the lightning bolt, and make it to Mount Olympus before the summer solstice. Together, they manage to find the weapon and bring it to Zeus on Mount Olympus, only after several other gods are discovered to have been in on the ploy. In the end, the immediate threat to the gods is solved, but something darker looms in the distance.

Although this book is targeted for younger kids, it remains captivating and fun for teenagers as well. While the language is a bit simple for books I usually read, Riordian is still able to convey an interesting plot line that keeps the reader engaged. It shows the relatable themes of friendship, teamwork, and leadership that I think every person can learn from, no matter their age.
