Wendy Mass’ A Mango Shaped Space is a Young Adult novel that tells Mia Winchell’s story, a young girl with synesthesia—a phenomenon that causes her to see colors and shapes when she hears sounds. Mia struggles with not being able to relate to her peers at school, as her synesthesia affects her relationships and ability to succeed in school. Confronted with a newfound determination to discover more about synesthesia, she meets a support group of people who experience the same things as her—Mia finally has a community she can relate to. Through further connections with her community and with the world around her, Mia discovers that synesthesia is rather a gift instead of something to be ashamed of, it gives her a unique perspective on life and a creative advantage. I would recommend this book to anyone in a heartbeat—it was so intriguing to learn about someone with such a fascinating outlook on life. A Mango Shaped Space was inspirational and encouraging, I loved getting the opportunity to read such a unique novel from a diverse perspective.
